Shear maintenance is very critical for a high performing edge. Failure to properly care for shears will cause premature dulling. Following these simple guidelines will extend the life of your edge...Guaranteed!
Clean shears thoroughly after each use by wiping them with a soft clean cloth.
Oil shears daily by applying a few drops of shear oil or clipper blade oil in the pivot area and around the screw head. Work oil in by opening and closing the blades, then wipe away all debris. Oiling shears helps keep dirt, hair, and grime from building up under the pivot area. Well-oiled shears are also easier to open and close, which helps prevent a fatigued hand.
PROPERLY TENSIONED SHEARS ARE A MUST!!!! Shears that are too loose WILL dull the edge quickly. Loose shears also have a tendancy to "Fold", "Pull", "Snag", or "Bite" hair. When the tension is too loose, the edges tend to ride into one another instead of on one another.
Proper shear storage proper will dramatically increase their lifespan. More edges are damaged due to neglect rather than over-use. To reduce the chance of damaging the blades, keep shears in the closed position when they are not being used. It’s best to store them in a designated scissor tray, case, pouch, or stand.
Avoid using dropped shears that have been severely nicked. Forcing a shear shut when a nick is present will further damage the edge, resulting in more metal removal during the sharpening process. This will decrease the life span drastically.
All hair shears are sharpened using a flathone with a clamping device to determine the exact angle of the cutting edge. The clamping device also reveals the angle of the edge from the previous sharpening. Sharpening shears at an improper angle can result in inconsistency throughout the blade, and most notably, overall poor cutting performance. The clamping device allows virtually no room for human error.
